Helping People in Need
By on Aug 9, 2007 in Dealing with People
Helping people in need is something I enjoy doing when the occasion arises and if it feels right to do. If you’re going to help people depending on how you intend to help a person you need to make sure you do it respectfully and without causing embarrassment.
During my Vision Quest we were split into groups and we had to complete an off site exercise at the local shopping center in which we had to ask shoppers for money and in return donate this money back to different shoppers.
This exercise taught us how it felt like to ask for money and how it felt like to give away this money that was donated to us. The experience I encountered was interesting to say the least and I was amazed with the results. More people were interested in donating there money than people willing to accept a donation. I started to think about this and why this is the case. Maybe it comes down to people thinking about there self worth or people thinking they are not worthy I am not sure.
Back to what prompted me in writing this Helping people in need content page. An hour ago I went to my local supermarket to do some grocery shopping. As I was shopping I walked past two young people who were having a load conversation which received my attention. The discussion was about the budget being tight and how they could not afford what one person wanted in food. I was saddened by what I heard because I think we all deserve what we want in life. As I walked by and continued to shop I thought about what I had just heard and experienced then I thought it was only a few dollars they needed extra and as i was at the cash register I made a cash withdrawal of $5 and the intention was to give it to this young couple. I did not follow through with it however because they looked stressed, there were people around and I did not want to put them in a position they did not need to be in.
I wish I could have helped the couple out however reflecting back I also think I did the right thing by not putting them in a position of embarrassment. We all have our own journey we need to fulfill so sometimes you need to let people continue on without adding else into their life.
