What is OCD

What is OCD? OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

OCD is a mental disorder that can take control of your life if it is not treated. It is not a disease.

The first step of OCD is the obsession which starts and this can be around anything. For example the person who has OCD may obsess about hands being dirty and the person will keep thinking about this over and over again which becomes compulsive. What happens next is simple if the person does not wash their hands then the after effect will be an anxiety attack. People suffering from OCD will do everything not to encounter these anxiety attacks so in this example the hands are washed many times over each day. It may sound crazy but to avoid the anxiety attacks this is what needs to be done.

Another example is there may be a person who ocd’s about germs outside the house. Once this takes over this person will not be able to leave the house because if they do then the anxiety level will rise which will then cause an anxiety attack. Best solution for no anxiety attack is to stay indoors it’s survival.

I have been in a room with people who were watching TV and a commercial about a current affair program appears on screen about a snippet about OCD involving a lady who needs to wash her hands over and over again and you hear the remarks ‘that lady is crazy for washing her hands so many times whats wrong with her’ and what is OCD?. To put it in simple terms unless you have had OCD it is very hard to understand this situation.

My condition of OCD went on for 10 years and the character Jack Nicholson played in the movie As Good as It Gets was me 75% of the time. If you’re dealing with people that have OCD be there for them and whatever you do don’t attempt to comfort them with statements like ‘you will be ok’.Unfortunately those that have OCD in many cases will stop living and commence dealing with OCD which can be a full time job.
